How Cancer Made Me Strong and More Protective
It was not easy for me when I diagnosed with rectal cancer. It was just like I am entering into a different world. Before this, I had never come into contact with the people who were suffering from this dreaded disease. I just tried to take the help of the internet and other journals to gather more information about this disease and read the inspiring stories to fight successfully against cancer.
Thanks to my doctor, who did her best to restore my confidence and to make me believe that I can survive and can lead a normal life after the treatment.
When I came to know about this disease
It came to me as a surprise. I found a swelling and I thought that it was hemorrhoid. But when it became severe, I visited a doctor. And I came to know that it was a tumor in my rectum. Though the doctor told me that I can get back to my normal life after the treatment, but it was difficult for me to believe that I am suffering from a life-threatening disease and I can recover completely by any means.
As I had heard before, it is not easy to recover from cancer. I prepared myself for any type of the unkind situation. But the future of my family without my presence was a great concern for me.
What was the treatment?
I thought to fight back and decided to go through all the procedures to return to my normal life. It was not easy and not impossible as well. My greatest support was my family and younger kids. They helped me to smile and to cooperate with the treatment. The treatment was painful and time-consuming. It took almost a year for the complete removal. I went through all the processes, but still, this treatment left me with a permanent colostomy.
I could not have recovered without the support of my family. Still, that phase of my life creates fear in my mind. The six weeks of radiation and the chemotherapy preceded surgery that successfully and safely removed my rectum, anus, and the sigmoid was a nightmare for me and for my family. My doctor created a small opening called stoma, from my stomach that will work as the outlet for the colostomy. The last phase was more painful. It was a strong chemo regimen that caused many nerve damages to my feet and the hands. It made me so weak that I was unable to cope up with the slightest bit of cold air as these were really painful.
The treatment was also expensive. We spent a huge amount for the entire treatment. It was an extra pressure, but we managed it somehow. All the credit goes to my family, friends, and relatives who offered their continual support till the recovery.
How it changed my life
The treatment took a long and I offered all the support and cooperation since I wanted to get back my normal life and to live my life with my family. My family was my strong support system and I could not have survived without the help of my doctor as well. The treatment took more than a year and now I feel I am fine.
But still, I need to follow some routine life for the complete recovery. I am lucky that the cancer was not widespread and the doctor succeeded to remove it completely by the surgery. After a few months, I might feel better. Things are not changed. But yes, this disease has changed me a lot. Now I am able to handle more complications in life. Moreover, I have started loving my family more sincerely as I missed them very much while undergoing this treatment. My husband was there with me all the time and helped to speed up the healing process.
From this experience, I have realized one thing about the life. Your family and your kids are your strong support system. You can fight against any disease if they stand by you and offer you strength and inspiration during these crucial phases of your life. Now I am a better person. Anyone can be recovered from rectal cancer if she takes the medical help immediately after noticing any signs and symptoms of this cancer. After the treatment, she can also lead a normal life like me.
